Job Summary
The Telecom Engineer is responsible for the design, installation, configuration, and maintenance of telecommunications systems in oil and gas facilities, including offshore platforms, refineries, and onshore processing plants. The role ensures reliable communication infrastructure essential for operational safety, control, and coordination in hazardous and remote environments.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and engineer telecom systems such as PAGA (Public Address & General Alarm), CCTV, radio systems (VHF/UHF/TETRA), VoIP, LAN/WAN, satellite communication, and intrusion detection systems.
- Develop project-specific telecom engineering deliverables (layouts, block diagrams, interconnection diagrams, equipment specifications, etc.).
- Ensure compliance with industry standards (API, IEC, NEC, NFPA), client requirements, and international safety standards (ATEX/IECEx for hazardous areas).
- Supervise and inspect installation and commissioning of telecom systems on-site.
- Collaborate with multidiscipline teams (electrical, instrumentation, process, HSE) during project development and execution.
- Conduct Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) and Site Acceptance Testing (SAT).
- Ensure cyber security compliance and integration of telecom systems into the digital control infrastructure.
- Participate in hazard and operability studies (HAZOP), risk assessments, and technical reviews.
- Provide technical support during construction, startup, and operational phases.
- Maintain documentation, as-built drawings, and update telecom system databases
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in Telecommunications, Electronics, Electrical Engineering, or related field.
- Minimum 12 years of relevant experience in the oil and gas or energy industry.
- Knowledge of telecom standards such as ITU, IEC, NEC, IEEE, and ISO.
- Familiarity with intrinsically safe systems and Ex-rated equipment for hazardous environments.
- Experience with fiber optics, microwave systems, structured cabling, and SCADA integration.
- Proficiency in engineering software (AutoCAD, SmartPlant, or similar).
- Strong troubleshooting, documentation, and project management skills.
Preferred Certifications
- CCNA/CCNP (Cisco)
- CompTIA Network+/Security+
- PMP (Project Management Professional)
- OSHA/HSE certifications for offshore safety
- IECEx/ATEX competency for hazardous areas (desirable)
Work Environment
- Onshore, offshore platforms, and site-based work in remote or hazardous locations.
- Must be willing to travel and work extended hours when required.
- Adherence to strict safety and operational standards.
