While there might not be definitive records of the absolute first computer virus in the Philippines, the most well-known and impactful one is the ILOVEYOU worm. It appeared in May 2000 and was created by a Filipino programmer. This worm is considered one of the most destructive in history.
Back in 2000, a computer virus called “ILOVEYOU” made its debut in the Philippines, causing quite a stir worldwide. This mischievous virus, also known as the “Love Bug,” was the brainchild of a Filipino programmer named Onel de Guzman. Interestingly, de Guzman created this virus not to cause harm but to pilfer internet access passwords. The “ILOVEYOU” virus quickly spread across the globe, infecting countless computers and causing an estimated $10 billion in damages. What’s intriguing is that during that time, there were no laws in the Philippines against creating malware. Consequently, de Guzman escaped legal repercussions. However, this incident prompted the Philippines to enact the E-Commerce Act of 2000 to combat cybercrime. This virus’s impact was so significant that it remains one of the most notorious computer viruses in history. Its legacy serves as a reminder of the importance of cybersecurity and the need to stay vigilant against such digital threats.
